YOGA FROM A TO Z: BREAKING DOWN THE YOGA VOCABULARY. PART II

Welcome back, friends!

If you are missing the part I of this series, from A to M, follow this link to check it out.

This time we'll be covering from N to Z. Enjoy!

  • Niyamas. The Niyamas are the moral rules, and the second limb described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. The five Niyamas are:

    • Saucha or Cleanliness

    • Santocha or Contentment

    • Tapas or Self-Discipline

    • Svadhyaya or Self-Study

    • Ishvara Phanidhana or Devotion

  • OM or AUM is considered the original syllable and has multitude of meanings. One of the most widespread is “the sound of the Universe.”

  • Puraka. Puraka is the Sanskrit term that means “inhalation”, the first step in the yogic breathing process.

  • Q is for ???

  • Rechaka. Rechaka is the Sanskrit word for “exhalation”, and the third step in the yogic breathing process.

  • Sankalpa is a Sanskrit term for intention, solemn vow or heartfelt desire.

  • Tadasana. Tada is a Sanskrit word for “Mountain,” so Tadasana can be translated as Mountain Pose. This is a standing foundational pose for all types of asana practices.

  • Ujjayi. The Ujjayi breath also known as victorious or ocean breath is a type of pranayama in which inhalation and exhalation pass through the nose. Its characteristic sound is created by slightly contracting the back of the throat during breathing.

  • Vinyasa is the coordination between movement and breath. The term also refers to a specific sequence of movements between postures.

  • Waheguru is a mantra most often used in Kundalini Yoga. Even though it doesn’t have one specific translation Wahe can be understood as an exclamation of wonder and guru means “teacher.”

  • X is for ???

  • Yamas are the ethical codes that ruled the Yoga world and were described by Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras. These values are the first step in the yoga path because they help us to follow this way with respect and integrity. The five yamas are:

    • Ahimsa or non-violence

    • Satya or truthfulness

    • Asteya or non-stealing

    • Brahmacharya or right use of energy

    • Aparigraha or non-attachment

  • ZZZ is the sound that we make during Savasana 🤣🤣🤣

Have I missed a term you want to know about?

Any suggestions for the Q and X?

I would love to know if this post was useful to you. Leave me a comment!

Much love,

Gaby
